Here is an update on our name change status. In our first post about changing our last name (surname) you’ll recall that we filled out all the paperwork, visited the clerk of the court and the family case manager, and had our fingerprints taken for a background check.
The background check happened on February 6th. After that, the fingerprinting place was to send them electronically to the state for the background check, and then they get sent to the clerk of the court and forwarded to the family case manager.
We’ve been anxiously awaiting a letter from the court house notifying us of a court date, which is the final step in the name change process. A couple of days after we submitted the paperwork we got a notice that they were missing the background check. We knew there hadn’t been enough time for the background check to work through the system yet, so we ignored that letter.
Last week, the last week of February, we received another letter saying the same thing. I called the family case manager yesterday and left a message. She called back today and told me they received Dream’s background check, but hadn’t received mine yet. She suggested I call the fingerprinting place.
I called the fingerprinting place and they said that both mine and Dreams were submitted. They suggested we call the case manager and tell her that she may need to request a resend from the state background check agency.
I called the case manager and she said she would check with the clerk of the court. She called back a few minutes later to tell me they had found my background check.
With that small snafu resolved things are moving again. The family case manager is going to schedule the court date and notify us by mail.
