Somehow the number of jackets in my closet has been slowly growing. I currently own six jackets of various types. At this point it may be important to note that I live in a warm climate. This winter the high temperature on most days has been in the 70s (that’s mid 20s Celsius) and the lows are typically in the 50s or 60s (teens in Celsius). On the colder days I typically wear a jacket over a fleece or sweatshirt. On the warmer days, if I need a jacket at all, I usually wear a fleece or sweatshirt. And on the in-between days or on the windy days I wear a jacket.
In theory I really only need one fleece or sweatshirt and one jacket.
Yet in reality, I find myself needing/wanting more. Here is what I have:
I have a thin fleece that has a little bit of style and looks a little nicer (the one with pockets).
I have another fleece that is warmer, but doesn’t look as nice (looks ok in the picture below, but it’s getting a little shabby).
I have a zip up sweatshirt that is thin, but is more sporty than nice.
I have a pullover sweatshirt that is warmer than all the others, but I don’t like pullovers so only wear it on the few days where the temp really dips, or if we are traveling to a cold climate.
Then we have jackets, of which I now have two. I have an old windbreaker style jacket with a fleece lining. It is well worn and not very stylish. It’s warm on its own, but I can also pair with it with a fleece or sweatshirt on really cold days.
Then I have the new wool coat that I bought recently. It’s really stylish and fits really well, but it doesn’t have a warm liner like my other jacket. That means I usually have to pair it with a fleece or sweatshirt.
Typing this all out has actually been a good exercise in figuring out what I really need. Here is what I think I’ll do.
I’m going to get rid of my warmer fleece. It’s starting to fade and get a bit shabby, plus I already have another fleece. Even though the thin stylish fleece isn’t as warm, it should serve the purpose overall.
I’m also going to get rid of my pullover sweatshirt. It’s nice and warm, but I really only wear it a couple times a year at most and I really prefer zip up to pullover.
That will leave me with a zip up sweatshirt, a thin fleece, and two jackets. I can mix and match in layers and on the really cold days I can layer the sweatshirt, fleece, and one of my jackets. I debated getting rid of the windbreaker style jacket, and just keeping the wool one, but there are times when the wool one wouldn’t be ideal, like when we go camping. Campfire smoke is easy to get out of the windbreaker jacket as I can just toss it in the washing machine. The wool one would have to be dry-cleaned.
That is a total of four instead of six, and that should meet my needs better and take up less closet space.
What does your winter wardrobe look like? Do you have the perfect combination of layered items, or did you end up with excess like me?
