We’re now in the third month of our P90x workouts. We are staying dedicated to the workouts most days, but some days we end up missing some. Typically we miss one or two days a week. In the first month we hardly missed any days, but the second month seemed busier with other activities. Sometimes we miss workouts on the weekend when we have a full day of other activities planned. We don’t feel too bad about those days, because we are usually pretty active walking about on those days anyway. We’ve also had a few times where we are visiting with friends or family and that doesn’t leave any time for the workout. Of course we are ok with that too, because spending time with our loved ones trumps a missed workout.
We found the P90x menu plan nearly impossible to stick to. Instead we have decided to simply eat more healthy meals and cut out the refined foods. We cut out soda completely. I haven’t had an ice cold Coke in two months. I don’t really miss it much, although I do occasionally crave a flavored beverage. I usually quench that craving with juice or soy milk. Mostly we’ve been drinking water. I feel like cutting out the empty calories in soda has really contributed to our slimming down.
They say with P90x that you should gauge your success in clothing sizes rather than in weight. I have found this to be true. I dropped about 15 pounds in the first month and have remained there even though I continue to drop in pants size. The weight tends to go up a little due to increased muscle, so even though I’m still losing fat my weight isn’t dropping any more.
I’ve gone down nearly two pants sizes from a 34 waist to a 32. I tried on some 32 pants and they were still a little snug, but I think I’ll be solid in the 32 waste size by the end of the 90 days. My spare tire is disappearing finally and my face is much slimmer. My chest is bulking up, not a huge amount, but definitely noticeable. I’m also happy to see my biceps finally developing a shape. Dream took a picture of me holding Faith and she mentioned that she could see my biceps flexing. It’s all pretty cool as I’ve never had a muscular physique. As a boy I was a bean pole and then I slowly grew into a slightly swollen bean pole with a spare tire.
I’m hoping to shed the rest of my spare tire by the end of the 90 days. We’re planning to jump back into another 90 days after we are done, so even if the spare tire isn’t gone after the first round it should be gone by swimsuit season in the spring.
Dream is looking good too. She didn’t have much weight to lose; for her it was more about toning up. It’s been nice to have her join me in the workouts. We have a good time working out together, and it gives us better quality time as opposed to sitting on the couch watching movies. And we are both looking damn sexy now. 🙂
I mentioned 5k in the title. I haven’t been doing any running since I started P90x. If you recall, I finally ran a full mile and then started P90x a couple weeks later. P90x has a lot of cardio in it and I was wondering how good of a job those cardio workouts were doing on my level of fitness. It seemed good, but I didn’t have a good way to measure it.
As I was flipping though our local community magazine I saw an add for a 5k. A thought entered my head, “I wonder if I could run a 5k.” I ended up missing my P90x workout last night due to Faith’s gymnastics and cheer taking up a majority of the night. So, after we got home I decided to try running a 5k distance. I did a little stretching, grabbed a bottle of water, and headed out the door. I already have a course mapped out so I just figured what the heck, lets see if I can run 5k.
I’m excited to say that I did it. Apparently the P90x has really good cardio. I ran the entire way and really didn’t get winded. My legs got fatigued but my cardio health seems to be in good form. And, even though my legs were tired, they weren’t hurting like in my very early attempts at running. I was able to keep a steady speed for the run, finishing in 39 minutes. That works out to just over 12 minutes per mile, which is the same time I ran the one mile a couple months ago.
I haven’t decided if I’ll enter the 5k or not yet. I’ll keep you posted if I decide to.
All in all things are going extremely well on the fitness front. We’ll be finishing up our 90 days of P90x in December and I’ll share some before and after pictures at that time.
