A few months ago I decided to start taking my fitness seriously. I had gotten a bit flabby, and generally wasn’t feeling as good as I could. I wanted to start a fitness routine that was easy enough to do every day and that fit into my schedule. I chose running, situps and pushups. These were things I could do at home and cost nothing to get started.
I wanted to establish the habit of fitness and exercise before spending any money.
It’s pretty common for people to flip this and spend a bunch of money on exercise gear and then never really get any exercise done.
I didn’t need a new outfit, new shoes, or a gym membership. I needed to establish the habit.
The beauty is that anyone can do this. You have everything you need to start exercising. I ran in the shoes I already owned. These weren’t the ideal running shoe, but they served the purpose while I was establishing the habit. Likewise, I didn’t need new clothes. I ran, and did pushups and situps in a t-shirt and cargo shorts. In the mornings I even did pushups and situps in my khakis and polo shirt.
This process works for more than just fitness. It works for many other hobbies as well. Start with the minimum equipment to see if it’s something you’ll want to stick with. When I first started taking my Jeep off-road, I drove it just the way it was for a long time. Eventually I added some bigger tires and a few other things to improve performance. Initially though, I didn’t need anything other than what I already owned, my Jeep.
Use what you already own.
This works well because I found out what stuff I really needed to buy to improve performance. In the case of my Jeep, I found that larger tires helped me to not get stuck as often. In the case of my fitness, I realized I wanted to do more… I wanted to step it up a notch.
P90X is a pretty extreme fitness routine. I saw an ad on the bulletin board at work for someone selling a used copy of the P90X videos and some equipment. I had never heard of it before, so I looked it up on the internet. It’s a home workout program that focuses on a total body workout and also includes nutrition recommendations and meal plans. This really piqued my interest. I had been considering some diet changes to help get rid of the spare tire. My wife, Dream, was also interested in a diet change.
We discussed it a bit, we read reviews from people that had completed, looked at a number of before and after pictures, and decided to go for it.
Now, like before, I’m working out every day, but at a much higher intensity. Every day we are doing between 60 and 90 minutes of exercise. Time has been flying by so quickly that we are already in our fourth week. We feel really good about it. It’s hard to fit in sometimes, but we’ve both made a commitment to take our health and fitness serious. It’s a 90 day program, so we have a ways to go, but so far we like it.
90 minutes a day?
Yeah… most days we do an hour and a half of exercise. I know what some of you are thinking. “I could never fit that into my schedule.” I know, right. I would have thought that up until the point we decided to go for it.
Basically we cut out our movie time. We don’t watch much TV, but we did watch movies on Netflix on a regular basis. Now a good part of our evenings are taken up with a workout, but we feel that’s better than sitting on the couch watching movies.
That’s where we’re at with fitness. I wanted to update everyone. I’ll continue posting occasionally about our Rethinking Fitness and our P90X program. We did also buy some additional equipment to do the P90X program, but I’m going to save that for a separate post.
