I can’t believe it’s already been two weeks since I started rethinking my fitness. The time has flown by. I have done pretty good with keeping up with my daily exercises. In the course of two weeks, I have missed my daily run twice. There were a couple of occasions where I forgot my run until just before bedtime, and even though I was tired I went ahead and did my run.
My daughter Faith started joining me on my runs. She doesn’t run, but instead rides her razor scooter or her bike. She’s also been joining me in doing the situps and pushups. She gets excited every time I decide it’s time to knock out some situps and pushups. If she’s busy with something else, she’ll ask me to wait for her. It’s nice have her join me on my path to fitness.
Let’s sum up how the exercises have been going.
The runs have been getting a little easier. I still feel like a stampeding elephant when I run, but I’m able to run for longer stretches before running out of breath. In the course of just two weeks I’ve gone from barely being able to run 100 feet to running more than half a mile in total. I’m alternating walking and running and running more than half the total distance now.
The one thing that seems to be holding me back is sore muscles and sore knees when I run. I figured it would be shortness of breath more than anything else, but it’s more sore and tired leg muscles. I’m sure I’ll work through this as I continue my daily runs. I’m open for tips and suggestions here if anyone has any. (In week 3 I took a few days off from running to help with the sore knees, but I’ll updated that in my next fitness post.)
The pushups and situps have been going really good. My entire upper body feels stronger. My back no longer aches from hours of sitting in a chair at work. Best of all, I’m able to play on the playground with Faith. I can climb on the play structures and swing from the monkey bars. Before I started rethinking my fitness, hanging from the monkey bars was rough on my arms. My shoulder would ache and my arm muscles would really hurt. Now I can easily swing from bar to bar.
I’m really pleased with the progress. I’ve upped my situps and pushups slightly, doing 11 reps now, to total 33 per day. I’m planning to continue upping the reps when it feels right.
