Buying boxes and packing material made our move much easier than our prior moves. Having a bunch of same size boxes, and having enough boxes to pack everything in really made things easier.
In the past, we would scavenge boxes from wherever we could find them. We always ended up with a many different sizes and we never had enough for all our stuff. We decided to bite the bullet and pay for boxes this time. It wasn’t as expensive as I thought it might be, and I want to share the costs with you.
21 Small Moving Boxes (16x12x12) at $0.70 each = $14.70
20 Medium Moving Boxes (18x18x16) at $1.12 each = $22.40
21 Large Moving Boxes (24x18x18) at $1.36 each = $28.56
2 Packs of Packing Paper at $9.99 each = $19.98
1 Tape Gun = $9.99
1 Six pack of tape = $12.99
That brings the total for packing materials to $108.62. That was money well spent in my mind. We bought all our packing supplies from Lowes. I noticed the other day that Home Depot carries boxes too, but that was the first time I’ve seen them there, so I’m not sure if all their stores carry them.
We had also checked craiglist for used boxes and found a few people listing them, but it was easier for use to pick the exact sizes we needed from Lowes. We considered selling ours on craigslist after we were done, and if we had a garage to store them in we probably would have, but with limited space in an apartment to store them temporarily we decided to recycle them instead.
I mentioned in a previous post that we hired movers this time. The cost of the movers was $446.25.
Add that to the cost of packing materials and we have a total of $554.87 for the move.
I think that’s a reasonable amount to spend for a move. Of course if we hadn’t gone through our Big Purge to get rid of all our useless junk, we would have needed at least three times as many boxes and a storage unit to keep it all in.
