Before we moved, I thought about some of the things I will miss about home ownership. It will be interesting to revisit this post later to see if I still miss these things after we’ve been in our new apartment for a few months.
This will be the biggest thing I’ll miss. For whatever reason it seems easier to make friends in a house than it is in an apartment. I suppose it’s the semi-permanent nature of a house. We were fortunate to have some great neighbors, and I’ll really miss having them live next door. Funny thing though, even though they were great neighbors, we didn’t really hang out and socialize much.
We also had some great families throughout our neighborhood, and Dream and Faith both spent many hours playing and chit chatting with them. Dream was also in several mom’s groups that she’ll be leaving behind with the move across town.
We added the pool shortly after Faith was born. Dream had always dreamed of having a swimming pool, and we all really enjoyed lounging and swimming on hot summer days. Our apartment has a pool, but it’s not as convenient as stepping out our back door. Plus our pool was heated, so we could always keep it at the exact right temperature.
There are a number of great things about having an attached garage. The first is staying out of the cold/hot/rainy weather when going from the car to inside the house. It was also a great place to store our bicycles, something that we’re lacking in the apartment. We’re still not sure what to do with our bikes, I think we’ll take them over to Dream’s parent’s house for now. A garage and driveway are also nice because they are like a dedicated safe play area. Dream often sat in a lawn chair in the driveway while Faith played, colored with chalk, or rode her bike or scooter.
I loved having lots of space. We had a family room that we used when guests came over and for sitting and talking. It had a sofa, chair, and coffee table. The simplicity of this room made it good for sitting and talking. We had a living room for TV time, games, and playing. With four bedrooms, we had the space to make one a play room filled with toys, and another an office. Our master bedroom and bath were also spacious. We also had lots of space in the kitchen, and a nice walk in pantry. Having lots of space is a nice feeling.
Our Big Bathtub and our Big Shower
We had a garden style tub, and we all liked to use that for hot bubbly baths. We also had a large shower with two shower heads. Two shower heads is a nice little luxury.
Those are the things we will miss most about our house. There are negatives to most of those things as well, but even so, they were nice to have. Time will tell if any of these things really mattered in the bigger picture. I suspect most will not, and that we’ll be just as happy wherever and in whatever type of home we choose to live.
