We signed our lease on Friday. It went well, but took much longer than I expected. It took about an hour and a half to read through and sign all the paper work. We had one small snafu with our renters insurance that we had to call and get the insurance company to straighten out, and we managed to get that done while we finished signing papers and inspect the apartment. The snafu was that the apartment complex had to be listed as an additional interest part on the policy. The insurance rep took care of it and faxed a new copy of the policy.
Dream planned to get Faith signed up at the new school as soon as we had our lease paperwork, but since it took so long, and Dream had to be back at our old house in time to pick Faith up from school, we decided to wait until Tuesday to sign her up. (Monday is a school holiday.)
We brought a load of stuff with us that morning, figuring that since we were driving all the way over there to sign the lease, we might as well bring some stuff. We had movers scheduled for Saturday, but we wanted to bring most of the breakables and odd sized / difficult to box items ourselves. Friday morning we brought the TV and TV stand, my PlayStation 3, Dream’s laptop, Faith’s Laptop, my work laptop, and a couple small boxes of things.
My plan was to get the TV and PlayStation hooked up so I could play some video games while we waited for the cable guy and the new furniture to be delivered. The cable company called and said they wanted to come early. Since our lease signing was nearly complete I said, “That would be great.”
We got our keys and headed over to our new apartment. I unloaded the laptops, the TV, and TV stand and got everything setup. The cable guy arrived soon after to hook up our cable Internet. We’re not getting cable TV, just Internet. I got most of our other stuff unpacked, and then Dream took off to pick up Faith from school.
After she left, I realized I forgot to get the HDMI cable out of the car. This one little cable is what connects the PlayStation to the TV. That killed my plan to play video games while I waited for the furniture to arrive. Good thing the cable guy came early so at least I had Internet access. I wasted some time surfing YouTube. I thought updating our progress on the blog, but I didn’t feel like doing anything that required thinking.
Dream picked up Faith and made it back before the furniture was delivered. We had ordered a new sectional and a dinette set. The sectional is an ‘L’ shaped version, and fit nicely in the apartment. I also included a sleeper sofa on one side of the ‘L’. She brought a few more things back with her and we got those unloaded.
Faith’s grandma (the good one) came by to visit. She lives about 10 or 15 minutes away now, and Faith has been pretty excited to live closer to her grandma. Dream, Faith, Grandma, and two of Faith’s cousins went to dinner, while I made another trip home to pick up the Barbie dream house and our other TV. I also stopped by CompUSA to pick up a new wireless router and portable hard drive. Since we don’t have room for a desktop computer I want to centralize our photo storage. The plan is to attach a USB hard drive to the wireless router. I’ll let you know how that goes when I get it hooked up. I hooked up the wireless router, but haven’t tried attaching the hard drive yet.
I should mention that on the way back to the house there were two big accidents on the interstate. This was a nice reminder of why I wanted to move closer to work and not have to deal with that drive anymore.
We always like to stay the first night we rent or own a new place. When we first moved into our house, we slept in sleeping bags in a completely empty house. And so we ended the night by pulling out the sleeper out of the sofa and spending the first night in our new apartment.
Check back tomorrow to see how the rest of the move went.
