I took care of Minimalist Setback #3 this weekend. Our master closet had accumulated a lot of clutter, so much so that I didn’t even like going in there. In the video below I share the process with you.
Hi, Welcome to Rethinking the Dream.
I’m Eric West and this is my daughter Josie.
Today we’re standing in our not-so-minimalist closet. This has become a dumping ground in the last few months for everything that didn’t have a home. Today we are going to tackle this, and try to get it better organized. Remove the stuff that doesn’t need to be in here and get it in better order so that it’s more functional and better to use. Lately I’ve dreaded even coming in here because it’s so messy and hard to get around stuff.
You’ll see down here we have some boxes that we had from our china. We’re going to reuse these for something else, I’m not sure what yet. Since they’ve been in flux they are sitting here.
We have my wife’s clothes on this side and also on the back. We’re going to rearrange because the clothes in the back are not used as often. I’m going to move my clothes to the back and move the ones that are less often used behind the door. That will make it easier for me to get to my stuff.
You’ll also see some stuff that wasn’t put away. We used it a few months ago and it just sat here in the middle. It should be back in the corner.
I have the doors to my Jeep here. In the summer I usually take the doors off. They go in here because I don’t have any other place to keep them.
There are some roller skates sitting here. Then up top we have our backpacks that we use when we travel. Some other miscellaneous stuff that didn’t have any other place to go. We’re going to try to find better homes for this stuff.
Behind the door we have more junk. Tools, a chair, and some stuff that can be decluttered. Over here is our storage for files and pictures. This is all my clothes. I have polo shirts for work and t-shirts for after work. I have some shorts hang drying. They are quick dry shorts that can’t be dried in the dryer. On top of our drawer unit I have my jean, pants, and shorts.
That’s what we are tackling today. We’ll see how it goes. I want to make this area a lot easier to use, a lot more functional that it is now. I want to do it without buying a new closet organizer. I looked at them, and they are nice, but even the cheap ones are expensive. I think we can do with what we have and organize it to make better use of it instead of buying something new.
I’m going to go away from the camera for a bit, do some organizing, and then come back and talk about it afterwards. See you soon.
*a bit later I found my daughter wearing her mom’s boots and going through her memory drawer, and I filmed a little bit of that.
*halfway point and back in the closet
Here we’re about halfway done and you can already see the difference. I have my clothes in the back of the closet and they are much easier to get to. I no longer have to go around the door to get to them. It was a pain in the butt every morning to do that.
Now all my clothes are here. We moved the cabinets here also, and I keep my jeans, pants, and shorts on top. We don’t have a dresser, we got rid of that a long time ago. So, I’ve been using this. It’s easy and quick, just grab and go.
It’s already starting to look better.
I’ve mentioned before that when you are decluttering, and if you have kids, include them in the decluttering. It helps teach them what to do, and helps set the example. As you can see she’s really into it. She’s wearing mom’s boots and found our storage of kid’s memorabilia. Things from her first grade and kindergarten years. We have one drawer dedicated to that stuff. She’s having a good time going through that stuff.
That’s what we have so far, and now we are going to pop into the other room and take a look at what came out of the closet that we still have to go through.
*relocated to the living room where we have everything piled up.
Here is all the stuff that came out of my closet. You can’t even believe how much stuff a closet will hold until you get it spread out on the floor. It’s kind of ridiculous, it’s almost embarrassing.
I have some of my tools over there. I still do some of my own work on my Jeep so I keep a small set of tools. We’ve got the suitcase and duffle bags. We usually use backpacks when we travel, but sometimes we use the suitcase. When we went on our cruise we packed our snorkel gear in the suitcase.
I have boxes. How many of you save boxes? I used to be a bad box saver, and it’s not completely gone away. These are going to go away. I’ll snap a picture of serial numbers off the boxes, and then the boxes need to go.
We had arms from our dining chairs. We bought two with arms and two without. We decided we didn’t like the arms, so we took them off. Then they remained in the closet. There is really no reason to keep these. If we later decided to sell the chairs we’ll sell them without the arms.
We have some weights and workout stuff from when we were doing P90X. We aren’t doing it anymore. It was good to do once, but now we are focusing on other things. We’ll probably sell that stuff.
Over here we have some shoes and some holiday stuff. We’ve gone through some of the shoes and we have a small pile that we will donate. My wife likes to wear a lot of different shoes, I’m sure some of you can relate to that.
Jeep doors, boxes, some of this stuff will go back in the closet because I don’t have a better spot for it. This big trunk held our workout stuff will either get repurposed or we’ll get rid of it.
On the couch over there we have a couple bags of winter clothes. We’re in Florida, so we don’t use much winter stuff, but we keep a few items for when we travel to colder locations. We’ll sort through it to see if we still need all that stuff.
The next step is to go through all this stuff and decide what we keep and what we get rid of. Hopefully we’ll be more organized when it goes back in.
It’s been about 45 minutes since we started. That’s how long it took to get a base organization in the closet and get all the stuff out to sort. One thing we didn’t have to do this time was to declutter our clothing. We did that a recently, so that was already done. If we had to do that too, that would be a huge task. I’d recommend splitting the clothing and the closet declutter into different days. If you get too much at one time you can get overwhelmed. This is almost to that point to me, where I don’t even want to go through all this stuff now that it’s out.
We’re going to push on through to get this stuff done. Then we’ll come back and I’ll show you the closet.
*later in the day, everything is done and we’re back in the closet for the wrap up.
It’s much later in the day. We took a break for lunch and did some other stuff. Now I’m back in the closet with the results. You can see all my stuff is now neatly organized and easy to access. We moved our jackets and our dressier clothes that we don’t wear often to the door side.
On my wife’s side we organized by use. Daily wear, tank tops, undershirts, shoes, and sweaters. It’s now a lot more organized and things are easier to get to.
As I mentioned earlier we moved the drawer unit to the middle. That also makes it easier to open the drawers because we shouldn’t end up with as much stuff getting in the way of the drawers.
We moved the folding chair, bike pump, and wedding dress to the corner. My Jeep doors were moved to the side behind the door. We moved our winter stuff into one of the old china boxes and moved it to the corner behind the door.
We did some straightening and organizing. Overall this is going to be much more functional.
I think when a lot of people are setting up a shared closet, his and hers, or his and his or hers and hers, whatever the case may be, you tend to split in half. One party gets one half, the other party gets the other half. That’s what we did, because it seemed like a good idea. The problem is one half ended up behind the door.
What we did now is split it into thirds. One third is hers, one third is mine, and the last third behind the door is shared (stuff that doesn’t get used as often).
It feels really good to have this done. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. That’s pretty much it. Thanks for watching.
I’m not the only one that likes the newly decluttered closet. Our cat has been spending a lot of time lounging in there after the declutter.
