One of the advantages to having a smaller space is that cleanups are faster. When we living in our house, it felt like we spent hours cleaning up. Today I’m going to attempt to clean the living / dining areas of our apartment in 30 minutes or less.
(This is a video post, so if you are viewing in email or in an RSS reader, you might need to click through to the blog to view the video or you can view it directly on YouTube.) My new intro is a little loud, so you may want to turn down the volume a little at first. (I’ll adjust that in future videos.)

Hi. Welcome to Rethinking the Dream. I’m Eric West and today we’re going to do a little cleaning up.
If you’ve been following my blog, you may recall that we are doing a 30 minute cleanup every night. That works great when we actually do it. The last few days, not so much. We haven’t been doing it at all. It’s the weekend, school is out, the kids have been playing and making a mess, we’ve been playing and making messes.
Today you are going to see our living room in a complete mess. One of the nice things about having a small living room is that it’s easy and quick to clean. I’m going to attempt to prove that today. I have a timer setup here. Hopefully I can do it. I’m going to try to do it in 30 minutes. I think thats a good amount of time to do a clean of the whole space. I think I can get it done in that amount of time. Let’s start the timer and see if I can do it.
The table always gets messy. Cleaning it makes the whole room look better.
The couch looks messy, but it’s usually easy to clean. A few blankets needed folding and some of my electronics put away.
Off camera, in front of the bar, is a small pile of stuff. I have a bad habit of tossing stuff down here when I walk in the door.
Sweaters over chair, another bad habit.
Cleanup done in under 15 minutes. Enough time left to vacuum.
Glass top table is easily cleaned after crafts, but it attracts fingerprints and smudges.
So, there you have it. In about 20 minutes I cleaned the entire living room. It’s just one of the advantages of having a smaller place and less clutter to begin with. Even when it does get messy, 20 to 30 minutes, go through it and everything is clean.
If I was doing 30 minutes that would leave me an extra ten minutes, and I’ve got some things in the kitchen to do. Mostly dishes and stuff.
The living room is completely spotless, and I even had time to vacuum. Again, the advantages of having a small space and keeping it decluttered to begin with.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Tune in next time and I’ll have more videos to share with you. Thanks for watching.
Something I didn’t mention in the video is that having a decluttered home made it quite a bit easier to do the living room cleanup. Each time I left the area covered by the camera I was putting an item in it’s proper place. The sweaters got hung up in the closet and food items on the table went in the pantry. Toys and the like went in my daughter’s “in” area, which is a corner of her credenza for her to process when she returns from playing with friends.
Also notice the lack of tables as mentioned in an earlier post. You saw how much clutter ended up on our dining table, imagine how much more could end up in the space if we had end tables and coffee tables. With a single table in the room, most of the clutter ended up there, making the cleanup easier.
