Back in November I heard about Bubblews.com, a website that would pay you to write. Bubblews is a type of social media site, similar to Facebook in some respects. You write and post whatever you want, and you get paid based on how many people read, like, and comment on your post.
I decided to give it a shot and started a Bubblews Experiment to see if I could earn some extra money while writing random things. I basically used it in place of Facebook, and wrote about things that were going on in my life.
The Downside of Bubblews
In order to earn significant income you have to game the system.
What I mean by that is that you would have to use it purely with the intent to make money and not as a social media platform. You have to “connect” (in Facebook this would be “friending”) with as many people as possible. The more people you connect with, the more people will read and like your posts, and the more money you will earn.
It’s difficult to follow people and conversations.
I had hoped to use this as a Facebook replacement. I wanted a place where I could post my thoughts, and follow some like minded people. The problem is that the notification you get when a “connection” writes a new post doesn’t contain enough information. All you get is a notification that says “so-and-so submitted a new post.” You don’t get any headline or preview of what the post is about, you have to click a link to see their post. You can’t get a stream of articles from your connections like you can from your Facebook friends.
The Upside of Bubblews
You can earn money
I wrote nearly every day for about a month and earned $15. They have a$50 minimum payout, so I can’t actually collect that money yet, but it’s clear that money can be made. The more you write the more you can earn.
It’s easy to sign up and use
Sign up was super easy. I filled out a short form and was up and running. Writing is done through their website similar to what you would do on Facebook. Write a post and click submit.
You can use a pen name
Most social media sites, like Facebook and Google+, don’t allow you to use pen names. At bubblews you can use whatever name you want, allowing you some anonymity as you write.
After using Bubblews for about a month I decided it wasn’t for me. It is possible to make money, and I currently have about $15 in my account, but I don’t feel it’s developed enough to be enjoyable for me to use on a daily basis. The biggest irritation for me was seeing a bunch of people connecting with me simply as a means to increase their money earning potential. Add to that the fact that it’s hard to see what my authentic connections are writing without clicking through couple of links, and I soured on the whole experience.
I think if they could create a feed of some sort so that you could read all the articles from your connections on a single page then I would like it a little more.
What are your thoughts? If you’ve tried bubblews, what do you think?
